The Xansa Career Framework

The Career Framework is a Xansa tool which provides a common design and approach to people development and performance management within the Company. It is designed to help employees and Managers to:

All the jobs required in the organisation have been identified and grouped together according to career families (groups of jobs with similar skills) and bands (which reflect the accountability, complexity and influence in the nature of the work undertaken). To avoid a multiplicity of jobs, these are inevitably generic in nature.

For each job there is a generic job description which outlines the main purpose of the job and its key responsibilities and a skills profile which identifies the generic technical and professional skill requirements of the job. Due to the generic nature of the job titles/descriptions, these are often supplemented with terms of reference (TOR) to describe the specific requirements of a given role.

A competency model exists as part of the Career Framework which defines the ability, attitudes and behaviours which contribute to high performance.

The Career Framework is an open system, which means that all the components are available to all employees, who can see for themselves the career options available and the skills and competencies they need to develop in their existing job or to move to a new job.

The Career Framework supports a process by which performance, skills and competencies can be measured objectively.

Employees are encouraged to gain broad experience and skills by moving into roles both laterally across career families and vertically within a career family.

Employees refer to the Career Framework to help identify possible career development routes, and to aid personal development plan discussions.

Reviewing skill and competency levels is a joint effort between the Manager and the employee. Typically both parties will complete assessments individually and then meet to discuss similarities and differences in assessment and mutually agree the most appropriate level of skill or competency rating.

The Career Framework is reviewed annually to ensure the roles contained reflect the Xansa's requirements appropriately. Employees are encouraged to participate in this process to ensure the currency of the tools.
